FOR THE FRIDAYS OF CHRISTMAS
PSALMS & READINGS Please note that you do NOT have to say ALL of these eight liturgical hours if it seems too burdensome. Pray what you can! Like lifting weights, add more as you get used to it. Neither are you absolutely obliged to pray them at the recommended times (though it is better to do so). You could set aside just two or three periods in the day to cover them all. As a rough estimate, the entire eight prayer periods should only take around 1 hour per day. The approximate maximum time for each of the eight liturgical hours is as follows (please note that Matins has been shortened by 60%, to only 1 of 3 Nocturns): Matins (15 minutes); Lauds ( 7 minutes); Prime (7 minutes); Terce (4 minutes); Sext (4 minutes); None (4 minutes); Vespers (7 minutes); Compline (7 minutes). Total 55 minutes (more or less). So if you set aside three 20-minute periods a day, or two 30-minute periods, then you could easily manage to pray the entire Divine Office (abbreviated version) daily. The First Liturgical Hour
NIGHT PRAYER (MATINS) FOR FRIDAY usually prayed in the middle of the night, or else right before dawn (modern day suggestion: very last thing at night, or immediately after waking) Religious would rise from sleep after midnight in the very early hours of the morning, well before dawn, to pray Matins Usually Matins would consist of (1) an invitation to prayer called the "Invitatory"; (2) a hymn; (3) followed by nine psalms; (4) then three spiritual readings; and (5) after this the Te Deum a hymn of thanksgiving is said; (6) which is followed by the prayer or collect of the day or feast. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. The following extracts from the Divine Office of Matins is only around one-third of the actual length of Matins.
Versicle: O Lord, ✠︎ open thou my lips. (make the Sign of the Cross over the lips with your right thumb) Response: And my mouth shall declare thy praise. Versicle: O God, ✝ come to my assistance; (make the normal Sign of the Cross) Response: O Lord, make haste to help me. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. THE INVITATORY FROM THE OFFICE OF MATINS FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON Inviting all to come and praise the Lord our God Antiphon: Unto us a Christ is born, * O come, let us worship Him. Come let us praise the Lord with joy! Let us joyfully sing to God our Savior! Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving and sing joyful praise to Him with psalms! Antiphon: Unto us a Christ is born, * O come, let us worship Him. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off His people: for in His hand are all the ends of the Earth, and the heights of the mountains are His. Antiphon: O come, let us worship Him. For the sea is His and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land. (genuflect for next sentence) Come let us adore and fall down, and weep before the Lord that made us! (rise) For He is the Lord our God: and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Antiphon: Unto us a Christ is born, * O come, let us worship Him. Today if you shall hear His voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation by the Israelites during the Exodus, according to the day of temptation in the desert wilderness: where your fathers tempted Me, they tested Me, and saw My works. Antiphon: O come, let us worship Him. Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: “These people always err in their heart! And these men have not known My ways!” So I swore, in My wrath, that they shall not enter into My rest! Antiphon: Unto us a Christ is born, * O come, let us worship Him. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: O come, let us worship Him.* Unto us a Christ is born, * O come, let us worship Him. THE CHRISTMAS HYMN FROM THE OFFICE OF MATINS Jesus, the Ransomer of man, Who, ere created light began, Didst from the sovereign Father spring, His power and glory equallng. The Father’s Light and Splendor Thou, Their endless hope to Thee that bow; Accept the prayers and praise today That through the world Thy servants pay. Salvation’s Author, call to mind How, taking form of humankind, Born of a Virgin undefiled, Thou in man’s flesh becam’st a Child. Thus testifies the present day, Through every year in long array, That Thou, salvation’s source alone, Proceedest from the Father’s throne. The heavens above, the rolling main And all that earth’s wide realms contain, With joyous voice now loudly sing The glory of their new-born King. And we who, by Thy precious Blood From sin redeemed, are marked for God, On this the day that saw Thy birth, Sing the new song of ransomed earth. O Lord, the Virgin-born, to Thee Eternal praise and glory be, Whom with the Father we adore And Holy Ghost forevermore. Amen. The first of three psalms PSALMS 11 & 13 combined Antiphon: The Lord hath said unto Me: * Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten thee. 11:2 Save me, O Lord, for there is now no saint: truths are decayed from among the children of men. 11:3 They have spoken vain things everyone to his neighbor: with deceitful lips, and with a double heart have they spoken. 11:4 May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things. 11:5 Who have said: “We will magnify our tongue! Our lips are our own! Who is Lord over us?” 13:1 The fool hath said in his heart: “There is no God!” They are corrupt, and are become abominable in their ways: there is none that doth good, no not one. 13:2 The Lord hath looked down from Heaven upon the children of men, to see if there be any that understand and seek God. 13:3a They are all gone aside, they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good, no not one. 13:3b Their throat is an open sepulcher: with their tongues they acted deceitfully; the poison of asps is under their lips. 13:3c Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood. 13:3d Destruction and unhappiness in their ways: and the way of peace they have not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. 13:4 Shall not all they know that work iniquity, who devour My people as they eat bread? 13:5 They have not called upon the Lord: there have they trembled for fear, where there was no fear. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: The Lord hath said unto Me: * Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten thee. The second of three psalms PSALMS 17 Antiphon: In the Lord's days * shall abundance of peace arise and flourish. 17:2 I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength! The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my deliverer! 17:3 My God is my helper, and in Him will I put my trust. My protector and the horn of my salvation, and my support. 17:4 Praising I will call upon the Lord; and I shall be saved from my enemies. 17:5 The sorrows of death surrounded me; and the torrents of iniquity troubled me. 17:6 The sorrows of Hell encompassed me; and the snares of death prevented me. 17:7 In my affliction I called upon the Lord, and I cried to my God! And He heard my voice from His holy temple and my cry before Him came into His ears! 17:17 He sent from on high, and took me in; and pulled me out of many waters. 17:18 He delivered me from my strongest enemies, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. 17:19 They confronted me in the day of my affliction: and the Lord became my protector. 17:20 And He brought me forth into a spacious place! He saved me, because He was well pleased with me. 17:21 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands. 17:22 Because I have kept the ways of the Lord; and have not done wickedly against my God. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: In the Lord's days * shall abundance of peace arise and flourish. The third of three psalms PSALM 23 Antiphon: Truth is sprung out of the earth, * and righteousness hath looked down from Heaven. 23:3 Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord: or who shall stand in His holy place? 23:4 The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, who hath not taken his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbor. 23:5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, and mercy from God his Savior. 23:6 This is the generation of them that seek Him, of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob. 23:7 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in. 23:8 Who is this King of Glory? The Lord who is strong and mighty: the Lord mighty in battle. 23:9 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in. 23:10 Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Truth is sprung out of the earth, * and righteousness hath looked down from Heaven. Versicle: The Lord is as a bridegroom. Response: Coming out of his chamber. Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Versicle: And lead us not into temptation: Response: But deliver us from evil. Absolution before the reading: O Lord Jesus Christ, graciously hear the prayers of Thy servants, and have mercy upon us, Who livest and reignest with the Father, and the Holy Ghost, ever world without end. Amen. FIRST READING Taken from a homily of Pope St. Leo I (St. Leo the Great). Sermon XXII Let us be glad in the Lord, dearly-beloved, and rejoice with spiritual joy that there has dawned for us the day of ever-new redemption of ancient preparation, of eternal bliss. For as the year rolls round, there recurs for us the commemoration of our salvation, which promised from the beginning, accomplished in the fullness of time will endure for ever; on which we are bound with hearts up-lifted to adore the divine mystery: so that what is the effect of God’s great gift may be celebrated by the Church’s great rejoicings. For God the almighty and merciful, Whose nature as goodness, Whose will is power, Whose work is mercy: as soon as the devil’s malignity killed us by the poison of his hatred, foretold at the very beginning of the world the remedy His piety had prepared for the restoration of us mortals: proclaiming to the serpent that the seed of the woman should come to crush the lifting of his baneful head by its power, signifying no doubt that Christ would come in the flesh, God and man, Who born of a Virgin should by His incorrupt birth condemn the despoiler of the human stock. Thus in the whole and perfect nature of true man was true God born, complete in what was His own, complete in what was ours. And “ours” we call what the Creator formed in us from the beginning and what He undertook to repair. For what, the deceiver brought in and the deceived admitted had no trace in the Savior. Nor because He partook of man’s weaknesses, did He therefore share our faults. He took the form of a slave without stain of sin, increasing the human and not diminishing the Divine: because that “emptying of Himself” whereby the Invisible made Himself visible and Creator and Lord Of all things as He was, wished to be mortal, was the condescension of Pity not the failing of Power. Versicle: But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Response: Thanks be to God. Versicle: This is the day whereon the King of heaven was pleased to be born of a Virgin, that He might bring back to Heaven man who was lost. There is joy among the hosts of Angels, because eternal salvation hath appeared unto men. Response: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, to men of goodwill. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: This is the day whereon the King of heaven was pleased to be born of a Virgin, that He might bring back to Heaven man who was lost. There is joy among the hosts of Angels, because eternal salvation hath appeared unto men. SECOND READING Continuation of the homily of Pope St. Leo I (St. Leo the Great). Sermon XXII Therefore, when the time came, dearly beloved, which had been fore-ordained for men’s redemption, there enters these lower parts of the world, the Son of God, descending from His heavenly throne and yet not quitting His Father’s glory, begotten in a new order, by a new nativity. In a new order, because being invisible in His own nature He became visible in ours, and He whom nothing could contain, was content to be contained: abiding before all time He began to be in time: the Lord of all things, He obscured His immeasurable majesty and took on Him the form of a servant: being God, that cannot suffer, He did not disdain to be man that can, and immortal as He is, to subject Himself to the laws of death. And by a new nativity He was begotten, conceived by a Virgin, born of a Virgin, without paternal desire, without injury to the mother’s chastity: because such a birth as knew no taint of human flesh, became One who was to be the Savior of men, while it possessed in itself the nature of human substance. For when God was born in the flesh, God Himself was the Father, as the archangel witnessed to the Blessed Virgin Mary: “because the Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee: and therefore, that which shall be born of thee shall be called holy, the Son of God.” The origin is different but the nature like: not by intercourse with man but by the power of God was it brought about: for a Virgin conceived, a Virgin bore, and a Virgin she remained. Versicle: But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Response: Thanks be to God. Versicle: O ye shepherds, speak, and tell us what ye have seen; who is appeared in the earth? Response: We saw the new-born Child, and Angels singing praise to the Lord. Versicle: Speak; what have ye seen? And tell us of the Birth of Christ. Response: We saw the new-born Child, and Angels singing praise to the Lord. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: We saw the new-born Child, and Angels singing praise to the Lord. THIRD READING Continuation of the homily of Pope St. Leo I (St. Leo the Great). Sermon XXII Consider here not the condition of her that bore but the will of Him that was born; for He was born Man as He willed and was able. If you inquire into the truth of His nature, you must acknowledge the matter to be human: if you search for the mode of His birth, you must confess the power to be of God. For the Lord Jesus Christ came to do away with not to endure our pollutions: not to succumb to our faults but to heal them. He came that He might cure every weakness of oar corruptness and all the sores of our defiled souls: for which reason it behooved Him to be born by a new order, who brought to men’s bodies the new gift of unsullied purity. For the uncorrupt nature of Him that was born had to guard the primal virginity of the Mother, and the infused power of the Divine Spirit had to preserve in spotlessness and holiness that sanctuary which He had chosen for Himself: that Spirit (I say) who had determined to raise the fallen, to restore the broken, and by overcoming the allurements of the flesh to bestow on us in abundant measure the power of chastity: in order that the virginity which in others cannot be retained in child-bearing, might be attained by them at their second birth. Versicle: But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. Response: Thanks be to God. Versicle: The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. * Response: And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the Only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Versicle: All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made. Response:And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the Only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us PRAYER Versicle: O Lord, hear my prayer. Response: And let my cry come unto Thee. (Throughout the Octave of Christmas) Let us pray. Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that the new birth of Thy Only-begotten Son as man may set us free, who are held by the old bondage under the yoke of sin. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Response: Amen. CONCLUSION Versicle: O Lord, hear my prayer. Response: And let my cry come unto Thee. Versicle: Let us bless the Lord! Response: Thanks be to God! Versicle: May the souls of the faithful, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Response: Amen. The Second Liturgical Hour
DAWN PRAYER (LAUDS) FOR FRIDAY usually prayed before dawn (modern day suggestion: after waking in the morning, before breakfast) The Religious would rise from sleep once again before dawn, to pray Lauds. If Matins was not prayed during the middle of the night, then it is prayed now, at dawn, immediately before praying Lauds. Usually Lauds consists of (1) five psalms with their appropriate seasonal antiphons (2) followed by what is called a "Chapter Verse" which is a short paragraphed reading; (3) this is followed by a hymn that suits the liturgical season; (4) then follows the Canticle of St. Zachary, the "Benedictus" with its appropriate seasonal antiphon; (5) finally there is said the prayer or collect for the day or feast. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. OPENING INVOCATIONS
Versicle: O God, ☩ (make the Sign of the Cross) come to my assistance! Response: O Lord, make haste to help me! Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. The first of five psalms PSALM 21 Antiphon: O ye shepherds, speak, * and tell us what ye have seen; who is appeared in the earth? We saw the newborn Child, and angels singing praise to the Lord, alleluia, alleluia. 21:5 In Thee have our fathers hoped: they have hoped, and Thou hast delivered them. 21:6 They cried to Thee, and they were saved! They trusted in Thee, and were not confounded. 21:7 But I am a worm, and no man: the reproach of men, and the outcast of the people! 21:8 All they that saw me have laughed me to scorn: they have spoken with the lips, and wagged the head. 21:9 He hoped in the Lord, let Him deliver him! Let Him save him, seeing that He delighteth in him. 21:10 For Thou art He that hast drawn me out of the womb: my hope from the breasts of my mother. 21:11 I was cast upon Thee from the womb. From my mother’s womb Thou art my God. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: O ye shepherds, speak, * and tell us what ye have seen; who is appeared in the earth? We saw the newborn Child, and angels singing praise to the Lord, alleluia, alleluia. The second of five psalms PSALM 21 (continued) Antiphon: The Mother brought forth the King, * Whose name is called The Eternal; the joy of a Mother was hers, remaining a Virgin unsullied; neither before nor henceforth hath there been or shall be such another, alleluia. 21:12 Depart not from me! For tribulation is very near: for there is none to help me! 21:13 Many calves have surrounded me! Fat bulls have besieged me! 21:14 They have opened their mouths against me, as a lion growling and roaring. 21:15 I am poured out like water; and all my bones are scattered! My heart is become like wax melting in the midst of my bowels! 21:16 My strength is dried up like clay, and my tongue hath cleaved to my jaws: and Thou hast brought me down into the dust of death! 21:17 For many dogs have encompassed me! The council of the wicked hath besieged me! They have dug my hands and feet! 21:18 They have numbered all my bones! And they have looked and stared upon me! 21:19 They parted my garments amongst them; and upon my vesture they cast lots! 21:20 But Thou, O Lord, remove not Thy help to a distance from me; look towards my defense! Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: The Mother brought forth the King, * Whose name is called The Eternal; the joy of a Mother was hers, remaining a Virgin unsullied; neither before nor henceforth hath there been or shall be such another, alleluia. The third of five psalms PSALM 26 Antiphon: The Angel said unto the shepherds * I bring you good tidings of great joy; for unto you is born this day a Savior of the world, alleluia. 26:2a The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the protector of my life: of whom shall I be afraid? 26:2b Whilst the wicked draw near against me, to eat my flesh. My enemies that trouble me, have themselves been weakened, and have fallen. 26:3 If armies in camp should stand together against me, my heart shall not fear. If a battle should rise up against me, in this will I be confident. 26:4 One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. That I may see the delight of the Lord, and may visit His temple. 26:5 For He hath hidden me in His tabernacle; in the day of evils, He hath protected me in the secret place of His tabernacle. 26:6 He hath exalted me upon a rock: and now He hath lifted up my head above my enemies. I have gone round, and have offered up in His tabernacle a sacrifice of jubilation: I will sing, and recite a psalm to the Lord. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: The Angel said unto the shepherds * I bring you good tidings of great joy; for unto you is born this day a Savior of the world, alleluia. The fourth of five psalms PSALM 26 (continued) Antiphon: There was with the Angel a multitude of the heavenly host, * praising God, and saying Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, to men of good will, alleluia. 26:7 Hear, O Lord, my voice, with which I have cried to Thee: “Have mercy on me and hear me!” 26:8 My heart hath said to Thee: “My face hath sought Thee!” Thy face, O Lord, will I still seek. 26:9 Turn not away Thy face from me! Turn not away in Thy wrath from Thy servant! Be Thou my helper, forsake me not! Do not Thou despise me, O God my Savior! 26:10 For my father and my mother have left me: but the Lord hath taken me up. 26:11 Set me, O Lord, a law in Thy way, and guide me in the right path, because of my enemies. 26:12 Deliver me not over to the will of them that trouble me; for unjust witnesses have risen up against me; and iniquity hath lied to itself. 26:13 I believe to see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living. 26:14 Expect the Lord, do manfully, and let thy heart take courage, and wait thou for the Lord. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: There was with the Angel a multitude of the heavenly host, * praising God, and saying Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, to men of good will, alleluia. The fifth of five psalms CANTICLE OF ISAIAS (Canticle of Isaias taken from Isaias 45:15-30) Antiphon: Unto us this day a little Child is born, * and His name shall be called the Mighty God, alleluia, alleluia. 45:15 Verily Thou art a hidden God, * the God of Israel the savior. 45:16 They are all confounded and ashamed: * the forgers of errors are gone together into confusion. 45:17 Israel is saved in the Lord with an eternal salvation: * you shall not be confounded, and you shall not be ashamed for ever and ever. 45:18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens, * God Himself that formed the Earth, and made it, the very maker thereof: 45:19 He did not create it in vain: He formed it to be inhabited. * I am the Lord, and there is no other. 45:20 I have not spoken in secret, * in a dark place of the Earth: 45:21 I have not said to the seed of Jacob: Seek Me in vain. * I am the Lord that speak justice, that declare right things. 45:22 Assemble yourselves, and come, and draw near together, * ye that are saved of the Gentiles: 45:23 They have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven work, * and pray to a god that cannot save. 45:24 Tell ye, and come, and consult together: * who hath declared this from the beginning, who hath foretold this from that time? 45:25 Have not I the Lord, and there is no God else besides Me? * A just God and a savior, there is none besides Me. 45:26 Be converted to Me, and you shall be saved, all ye ends of the Earth: * for I am God, and there is no other. 45:27 I have sworn by Myself, the word of justice shall go out of My mouth, * and shall not return: 45:28 For every knee shall be bowed to Me, * and every tongue shall swear. 45:29 Therefore shall he say: In the Lord are my justices and empire: * they shall come to Him, and all that resist Him shall be confounded. 45:30 In the Lord shall all the seed * of Israel be justified and praised. CHAPTER VERSE (Romans 13:11) Versicle: God, Who, at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all, in these days hath spoken to us by His Son, Whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by Whom also He made the world. Response: Thanks be to God! HYMN From lands that see the sun arise To Earth's remotest boundaries, The Virgin-born today we sing, The Son of Mary, Christ the King. Blest Author of this earthly frame, To take a servant's form He came, That, liberating flesh by flesh, Whom He had made might live afresh. In that chaste parent's holy womb Celestial grace hath found its home; And she, as Earthly bride unknown, Yet calls that Offspring blest her own. The mansion of the modest breast Becomes a shrine where God shall rest: The pure and undefilèd one Conceived in her womb the Son. That Son, that Royal Son she bore, Whom Gabriel's voice had told afore; Whom, in His mother yet concealed, The infant Baptist had revealed. The manger and the straw He bore, The cradle did He not abhor; By milk in infant portions fed, Who gives e'en fowls their daily bread. The heavenly chorus filled the sky, The Angels sang to God on high, What time to shepherds, watching lone, They made creation's Shepherd known. All honor, laud, and glory be, O Jesu, Virgin-born to thee: All glory, as is ever meet, To Father and to Paraclete. Amen. Versicle: The Lord hath made known, alleluia. Response: His salvation, alleluia. THE “BENEDICTUS” (Canticle of St. Zachary. Luke 1:68-79) Antiphon: Glory be to God in the highest; * and on Earth, peace to men of good will, alleluia, alleluia.. 1:69 Blessed be the Lord ☩ (make a sign of the cross) God of Israel; * because He hath visited and wrought the redemption of His people: 1:69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, * in the house of David His servant: 1:70 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning: 1:71 Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us: 1:72 To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember His holy testament, 1:73 The oath, which He swore to Abraham our father, * that He would grant to us, 1:74 That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve Him without fear, 1:75 In holiness and justice before Him, * all our days. 1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways: 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation to His people, * unto the remission of their sins: 1:78 Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: 1:79 To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Glory be to God in the highest; * and on Earth, peace to men of good will, alleluia, alleluia.. PRAYER Versicle: O Lord, hear my prayer. The Third Liturgical Hour
MORNING PRAYER (PRIME) FOR FRIDAY usually prayed after breakfast and before starting work for the day (modern day suggestion: after breakfast and before work, before 9 a.m.) The word "Prime" refers to the first hour of daylight. It is the most recent addition to the Divine Office originating around the 4th century. It was the prayer said before starting work for the day. Usually Prime consists of (1) an opening hymn which is always the same regardless of season or feast (2) followed by three psalms with their appropriate seasonal antiphons (3) then comes what is called a "Chapter Verse" which is a short paragraphed reading; (4) this is followed by a prayer or collect which is always the same one, regardless of season or feast; (4) then the Martyrology for the day in read; (5) this is followed by another "Chapter Verse" and versicles; (6) then come the concluding prayers, which include the Our Father; (7) after which there is a seasonal "Chapter Verse" that is the same throughout the season; (8) finally there is said the short concluding prayer, which is always the same throughout the year. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia. HYMN Now in the sun’s new dawning ray, Lowly of heart, our God we pray That he from harm may keep us free In all the deeds this day shall see. May fear of him our tongues restrain, Lest strife unguarded speech should stain: His favoring care our guardian be, Lest our eyes feed on vanity. May every heart be pure from sin And folly find no place therein: Scant need of food, excess denied, Wear down in us the body’s pride. That when the light of day is gone, And night in course shall follow on. We, free from cares the world affords, May chant the praise that is our Lord’s. All laud to God the Father be, All praise, Eternal Son, to thee: All glory, as is ever meet, To God the holy Paraclete. Amen. The first of three psalms PSALM 5 For Prime, the antiphon is only said once before the three psalms are said, and once after the three psalms have been said. Antiphon: O ye shepherds, speak, * and tell us what ye have seen; who is appeared in the earth? We saw the newborn Child, and angels singing praise to the Lord, alleluia, alleluia. 5:2 Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my cry. 5:3 Hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God. 5:4 For to Thee will I pray, O Lord! In the morning Thou shalt hear my voice. 5:5 In the morning I will stand before Thee, and will see, because Thou art not a God that willest iniquity. 5:6 Neither shall the wicked dwell near Thee: nor shall the unjust abide before Thy eyes. 5:7 Thou hatest all the workers of iniquity! Thou wilt destroy all that speak a lie. The bloody and the deceitful man the Lord will abhor. 5:8 But as for me, in the multitude of Thy mercy, I will come into Thy house! I will worship towards Thy holy temple, in Thy fear. 5:9 Conduct me, O Lord, in Thy justice, because of my enemies, direct my way in Thy sight. 5:10 For there is no truth in their mouth; their heart is vain. 5:11a Their throat is an open sepulcher! They dealt deceitfully with their tongues! Judge them, O God! 5:11b Let them fall from their devices: according to the multitude of their wickedness cast them out: for they have provoked Thee, O Lord. 5:12 But let all them be glad that hope in Thee! They shall rejoice for ever, and Thou shalt dwell in them. And all they that love Thy Name shall glory in Thee: 5:13 For Thou wilt bless the just. O Lord, Thou hast crowned us, as with a shield of Thy good will. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The second of three psalms PSALM 6 6:2 O Lord, rebuke me not in Thy indignation, nor chastise me in Thy wrath. 6:3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak: heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. 6:4 And my soul is troubled exceedingly: but Thou, O Lord, how long? 6:5 Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for Thy mercy’s sake. 6:6 For there is no one in death that is mindful of Thee: and who shall confess to Thee in Hell? 6:7 I have labored in my groanings, every night I will wash my bed: I will water my couch with my tears. 6:8 My eye is troubled through indignation: I have grown old amongst all my enemies. 6:9 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping. 6:10 The Lord hath heard my supplication: the Lord hath received my prayer. 6:11 Let all my enemies be ashamed, and be very much troubled: let them be turned back, and be ashamed very speedily. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The third of three psalms PSALM 7 7:2 O Lord my God, in Thee have I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me. 7:3 Lest at any time he seize upon my soul like a lion, while there is no one to redeem me, nor to save. 7:4 O Lord my God, if I have done this thing, if there be iniquity in my hands: 7:5 If I have rendered to them that repaid me evils, let me deservedly fall empty before my enemies. 7:6 Let the enemy pursue my soul, and take it, and tread down my life on the Earth, and bring down my glory to the dust. 7:7 Rise up, O Lord, in Thy anger: and be Thou exalted in the borders of my enemies. And arise, O Lord my God, in the precept which Thou hast commanded: 7:8 And a congregation of people shall surround Thee. And for their sakes return Thou on high. 7:9 The Lord judgeth the people. Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice, and according to my innocence in me. 7:10 The wickedness of sinners shall be brought to nought: and Thou shalt direct the just: the searcher of hearts and reins is God. 7:11 Just is my help from the Lord: who saveth the upright of heart. 7:12 God is a just judge, strong and patient: is He angry every day? 7:13 Except you will be converted, He will brandish His sword: He hath bent His bow and made it ready. 7:14 And in it He hath prepared the instruments of death, He hath made ready His arrows for them that burn. 7:15 Behold he hath been in labor with injustice; he hath conceived sorrow, and brought forth iniquity. 7:16 He hath opened a pit and dug it; and he is fallen into the hole he made. 7:17 His sorrow shall be turned on his own head: and his iniquity shall comedown upon his crown. 7:18 I will give glory to the Lord according to His justice: and will sing to the Name of the Lord the most high. The first of three psalms PSALM 76 For None, the antiphon is only said once before the three psalms are said, and once after the three psalms have been said. Antiphon: Unto us this day a little Child is born, * and His name shall be called the Mighty God, alleluia, alleluia. 76:2 I cried to the Lord with my voice; to God with my voice, and He gave ear to me. 76:3 In the day of my trouble I sought God, with my hands lifted up to Him in the night, and I was not deceived. My soul refused to be comforted: 76:4 I remembered God, and was delighted, and was exercised, and my spirit swooned away. 76:5 My eyes prevented the watches: I was troubled, and I spoke not. 76:6 I thought upon the days of old: and I had in my mind the eternal years. 76:7 And I meditated in the night with my own heart: and I was exercised and I swept my spirit. 76:8 Will God then cast off for ever? Thou hast made Thy power known among the nations: 76:16 With Thy arm Thou hast redeemed Thy people the children of Jacob and of Joseph. 76:17 The waters saw Thee, O God, the waters saw Thee: and they were afraid, and the depths were troubled. 76:18 Great was the noise of the waters: the clouds sent out a sound. For Thy arrows pass: 76:19 The voice of Thy thunder in a wheel. Thy lightnings enlightened the world: the Earth shook and trembled. 76:20 Thy way is in the sea, and Thy paths in many waters: and Thy footsteps shall not be known. 76:21 Thou hast conducted Thy people like sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. The third of three psalms PSALM 78 78:1 O God, the heathens are come into Thy inheritance, they have defiled Thy holy temple: they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit. 78:2 They have given the dead bodies of Thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: the flesh of Thy saints for the beasts of the Earth. 78:3 They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem and there was none to bury them. 78:4 We are become a reproach to our neighbors: a scorn and derision to them that are round about us. 78:5 How long, O Lord, wilt Thou be angry for ever: shall Thy zeal be kindled like a fire? 78:6 Pour out Thy wrath upon the nations that have not known Thee: and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon Thy Name. 78:7 Because they have devoured Jacob; and have laid waste his place. 78:8 Remember not our former iniquities: let Thy mercies speedily prevent us, for we are become exceeding poor. 78:9 Help us, O God, our Savior: and for the glory of Thy Name, O Lord, deliver us: and forgive us our sins for Thy Name’s sake: 78:10 Lest they should say among the Gentiles: Where is their God? And let Him be made known among the nations before our eyes, by the revenging the blood of Thy servants, which hath been shed: 78:11 Let the sighing of the prisoners come in before Thee. According to the greatness of Thy arm, take possession of the children of them that have been put to death. 78:12 And render to our neighbors sevenfold in their bosom: the reproach wherewith they have reproached Thee, O Lord. 78:13 But we Thy people, and the sheep of Thy pasture, will give thanks to Thee for ever. We will show forth Thy praise, unto generation and generation. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Amen. Alleluia. The first of five psalms PSALM 80 Antiphon: Thine shall be the dominion * in the day of thy power, amid the brightness of the saints, from the womb, before the day-star, have I begotten thee. 80:2 Rejoice to God our helper: sing aloud to the God of Jacob. 80:3 Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel: the pleasant psaltery with the harp. 80:4 Blow up the trumpet on the new moon, on the noted day of your solemnity. 80:5 For it is a commandment in Israel, and a judgment to the God of Jacob. 80:6 He ordained it for a testimony in Joseph, when he came out of the land of Egypt: he heard a tongue which he knew not. 80:7 He removed his back from the burdens: his hands had served in baskets. 80:8 Thou calledst upon Me in affliction, and I delivered thee: I heard thee in the secret place of tempest: I proved thee at the waters of contradiction. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Thine shall be the dominion * in the day of thy power, amid the brightness of the saints, from the womb, before the day-star, have I begotten thee. The second of five psalms PSALM 80 (continued) Antiphon: The Lord sent redemption * unto His people, He hath commanded His covenant for ever. 80:9 Hear, O My people, and I will testify to thee: O Israel, if Thou wilt hearken to Me, 80:10 There shall be no new god in thee: neither shalt Thou adore a strange god. 80:11 For I am the Lord thy God, Who brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. 80:12 But my people heard not My voice: and Israel hearkened not to Me. 80:13 So I let them go according to the desires of their heart: they shall walk in their own inventions. 80:14 If My people had heard Me: if Israel had walked in My ways: 80:15 I should soon have humbled their enemies, and laid My hand on them that troubled them. 80:16 The enemies of the Lord have lied to Him: and their time shall be for ever. 80:17 And He fed them with the fat of wheat, and filled them with honey out of the rock. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: The Lord sent redemption * unto His people, He hath commanded His covenant for ever. The third of five psalms PSALM 81 Antiphon: Unto the upright there ariseth * light in the darkness; the Lord is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. 81:1 God hath stood in the congregation of gods: and being in the midst of them He judgeth gods. 81:2 How long will you judge unjustly: and accept the persons of the wicked? 81:3 Judge for the needy and fatherless: do justice to the humble and the poor. 81:4 Rescue the poor; and deliver the needy out of the hand of the sinner. 81:5 They have not known nor understood: they walk on in darkness; all the foundations of the Earth shall be moved. 81:6 I have said: “You are gods and all of you the sons of the most High.” 81:7 But you like men shall die: and shall fall like one of the princes. 81:8 Arise, O God, judge Thou the Earth: for Thou shalt inherit among all the nations. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Unto the upright there ariseth * light in the darkness; the Lord is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. The fourth of five psalms PSALM 82 Antiphon: With the Lord * there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption. 82:2 O God, who shall be like to Thee? Hold not Thy peace, neither be Thou still, O God. 82:3 For lo, Thy enemies have made a noise: and they that hate Thee have lifted up the head. 82:4 They have taken a malicious counsel against Thy people, and have consulted against Thy saints. 82:5 They have said: Come and let us destroy them, so that they be not a nation: and let the name of Israel be remembered no more. 82:6 For they have contrived with one consent: they have made a covenant together against Thee, 82:13 Who have said: Let us possess the sanctuary of God for an inheritance. 82:14 O my God, make them like a wheel; and as stubble before the wind. 82:15 As fire which burneth the wood: and as a flame burning mountains: 82:16 So shalt Thou pursue them with Thy tempest: and shalt trouble them in Thy wrath. 82:17 Fill their faces with shame; and they shall seek Thy Name, O Lord. 82:18 Let them be ashamed and troubled for ever and ever: and let them be confounded and perish. 82:19 And let them know that the Lord is Thy Name: Thou alone art the most High over all the Earth. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: With the Lord * there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption. The fifth of five psalms PSALM 83 Antiphon: Of the fruit * of thy body will I set upon thy throne. 83:2 How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Lord of host! 83:3 My soul longeth and fainteth for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God. 83:4 For the sparrow hath found herself a house, and the turtle a nest for herself where she may lay her young ones: Thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 83:5 Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house, O Lord: they shall praise Thee for ever and ever. 83:6 Blessed is the man whose help is from Thee: in his heart he hath disposed to ascend by steps, 83:7 In the vale of tears, in the place which he hath set. 83:8 For the lawgiver shall give a blessing, they shall go from virtue to virtue: the God of gods shall be seen in Sion. 83:9 O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. 83:10 Behold, O God our protector: and look on the face of Thy Christ. 83:11 For better is one day in Thy courts above thousands. I have chosen to be an abject in the house of my God, rather than to dwell in the tabernacles of sinners. 83:12 For God loveth mercy and truth: the Lord will give grace and glory. 83:13 He will not deprive of good things them that walk in innocence: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in Thee. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Of the fruit * of thy body will I set upon thy throne. Response: Thanks be to God. HYMN Jesus, the Ransomer of man, Who, ere created light began, Didst from the sovereign Father spring, His power and glory equaling. The Father’s Light and Splendor Thou, Their endless hope to Thee that bow; Accept the prayers and praise to-day That through the world Thy servants pay. Salvation’s Author, call to mind How, taking form of humankind, Born of a Virgin undefiled, Thou in man’s flesh becam’st a Child. The heavens above, the rolling main And all that earth’s wide realms contain, With joyous voice now loudly sing The glory of their new-born King. BEDTIME PRAYER (COMPLINE) FOR FRIDAY usually prayed before retiring to sleep for the night (modern day suggestion: anytime between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.) The English word Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day. The word was first used in this sense about the beginning of the 6th century by St. Benedict in his monastic Rule. Usually Compline consists of (1) an opening plea for God's blessing for the night to come; (2) followed by the Lord's Prayer (Our Father), an examination of conscience, and the recitation of the Act of Contrition, the Confiteor, with the two prayers of absolution that follow; (3) after which three psalms with their appropriate seasonal antiphons are prayed; (4) these are followed by a hymn which is always the same throughout the year; (5) then follows a "Chapter Verse"; (6) this is followed by the Canticle of St. Simeon; (7) after which comes the concluding prayer or collect, which is always the same; (8) finally, the seasonal antiphon or hymn to Our Lady is sung. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. OPENING INVOCATION

Then all say the Coniteor aloud I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed: (strike your chest three times) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. The first of three psalms PSALM 85 For Compline, the antiphon is only said once before the three psalms are said, and once after the three psalms have been said. Antiphon: Have mercy * on me, O Lord, and hear my prayer. 85:1 Incline Thy ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am needy and poor. 85:2 Preserve my soul, for I am holy: save Thy servant, O my God, that trusteth in Thee. 85:3 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I have cried to Thee all the day. 85:4 Give joy to the soul of Thy servant, for to Thee, O Lord, I have lifted up my soul. 85:5 For Thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild: and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon Thee. 85:6 Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer: and attend to the voice of my petition. 85:7 I have called upon Thee in the day of my trouble: because Thou hast heard me. 85:8 There is none among the gods like unto Thee, O Lord: and there is none according to Thy works. 85:9 All the nations Thou hast made shall come and adore before Thee, O Lord: and they shall glorify Thy Name. 85:10 For Thou art great and dost wonderful things: Thou art God alone. 85:11 Conduct me, O Lord, in Thy way, and I will walk in Thy truth: let my heart rejoice that it may fear Thy Name. 85:12 I will praise Thee, O Lord my God: with my whole heart, and I will glorify Thy Name for ever: 85:13 For Thy mercy is great towards me: and Thou hast delivered my soul out of the lower Hell. 85:14 O God, the wicked are risen up against me, and the assembly of the mighty have sought my soul: and they have not set Thee before their eyes. 85:15 And Thou, O Lord, art a God of compassion, and merciful, patient, and of much mercy, and true. 85:16 O look upon me, and have mercy on me: give Thy command to Thy servant, and save the son of Thy handmaid. 85:17 Show me a token for good: that they who hate me may see, and be confounded, because Thou, O Lord, hast helped me and hast comforted me. The second of three psalms PSALM 87 87:2 O Lord, the God of my salvation: I have cried in the day, and in the night before Thee. 87:3 Let my prayer come in before Thee: incline Thy ear to my petition. 87:4 For my soul is filled with evils: and my life hath drawn nigh to Hell. 87:5 I am counted among them that go down to the pit: I am become as a man without help, 87:6 Free among the dead. Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchers, whom Thou rememberest no more: and they are cast off from Thy hand. 87:7 They have laid me in the lower pit: in the dark places, and in the shadow of death. 87:8 Thy wrath is strong over me: and all Thy waves Thou hast brought in upon me. 87:9 Thou hast put away my acquaintance far from me: they have set me an abomination to themselves. I was delivered up, and came not forth: 87:10 My eyes languished through poverty. All the day I cried to Thee, O Lord: I stretched out my hands to Thee. 87:11 Wilt Thou show wonders to the dead? Or shall physicians raise to life, and give praise to Thee? 87:12 Shall anyone in the sepulcher declare Thy mercy: and Thy truth in destruction? 87:13 Shall Thy wonders be known in the dark; and Thy justice in the land of forgetfulness? 87:14 But I, O Lord, have cried to Thee: and in the morning my prayer shall prevent Thee. 87:15 Lord, why castest Thou off my prayer: why turnest Thou away Thy face from me? 87:16 I am poor, and in labors from my youth: and being exalted have been humbled and troubled. 87:17 Thy wrath hath come upon me: and Thy terrors have troubled me. 87:18 They have come round about me like water all the day: they have compassed me about together. 87:19 Friend and neighbor Thou hast put far from me: and my acquaintance, because of misery. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The third of three psalms PSALM 97 97:1 Sing ye to the Lord anew canticle: because He hath done wonderful things. His right hand hath wrought for him salvation, and His arm is holy. 97:2 The Lord hath made known His salvation: He hath revealed His justice in the sight of the Gentiles. 97:3 He hath remembered His mercy: His truth toward the house of Israel. All the ends of the Earth have seen the salvation of our God. 97:4 Sing joyfully to God, all the Earth; make melody, rejoice and sing. 97:5 Sing praise to the Lord on the harp, on the harp, and with the voice of a psalm: 97:6 With long trumpets, and sound of comet. Make a joyful noise before the Lord our king: 97:7 Let the sea be moved and the fullness thereof: the world and they that dwell therein. 97:8 The rivers shall clap their hands, the mountains shall rejoice together 97:9 At the presence of the Lord: because He cometh to judge the Earth. He shall judge the world with justice, and the people with equity. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
