FOR ALL THE WEDNESDAYS OF LENT
PSALMS & READINGS Please note that you do NOT have to say ALL of these eight liturgical hours if it seems too burdensome. Pray what you can! Like lifting weights, add more as you get used to it. Neither are you absolutely obliged to pray them at the recommended times (though it is better to do so). You could set aside just two or three periods in the day to cover them all. As a rough estimate, the entire eight prayer periods should only take around 1 hour per day. The approximate maximum time for each of the eight liturgical hours is as follows (please note that Matins has been shortened by 60%, to only 1 of 3 Nocturns): Matins (15 minutes); Lauds ( 7 minutes); Prime (7 minutes); Terce (4 minutes); Sext (4 minutes); None (4 minutes); Vespers (7 minutes); Compline (7 minutes). Total 55 minutes (more or less). So if you set aside three 20-minute periods a day, or two 30-minute periods, then you could easily manage to pray the entire Divine Office (abbreviated version) daily. The First Liturgical Hour
NIGHT PRAYER (MATINS) FOR WEDNESDAY usually prayed in the middle of the night, or else right before dawn (modern day suggestion: very last thing at night, or immediately after waking) Religious would rise from sleep after midnight in the very early hours of the morning, well before dawn, to pray Matins Usually Matins would consist of (1) an invitation to prayer called the "Invitatory"; (2) a hymn; (3) followed by nine psalms; (4) then three spiritual readings; and (5) after this the Te Deum a hymn of thanksgiving is said; (6) which is followed by the prayer or collect of the day or feast. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. The following extracts from the Divine Office of Matins is only around one-third of the actual length of Matins.
Versicle: O Lord, ✠︎ open thou my lips. (make the Sign of the Cross over the lips with your right thumb) Response: And my mouth shall declare thy praise. Versicle: O God, ☩ come to my assistance; (make the normal Sign of the Cross) Response: O Lord, make haste to help me. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise be to Thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory. THE INVITATORY FROM THE OFFICE OF MATINS FOR THE SEASON OF LENT Inviting all to come and praise the Lord our God Antiphon for Lent until Passion Sunday: Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch. Antiphon from from Passion Sunday until Wednesday of Holy Week: When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart. Come let us praise the Lord with joy! Antiphon from from Passion Sunday until Wednesday of Holy Week: When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. For the Lord will not cast off His people: for in His hand are all the ends of the Earth, and the heights of the mountains are His. Antiphon for Lent until Passion Sunday: For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch. Antiphon from from Passion Sunday until Wednesday of Holy Week: Do not harden your heart. For the sea is His and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land. (genuflect for next sentence) Come let us adore and fall down, and weep before the Lord that made us! Antiphon from from Passion Sunday until Wednesday of Holy Week: When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart. Today if you shall hear His voice, harden not your hearts: as in the provocation by the Israelites during the Exodus, according to the day of temptation in the desert wilderness: where your fathers tempted Me, they tested Me, and saw My works. Antiphon for Lent until Passion Sunday: For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch. Antiphon from from Passion Sunday until Wednesday of Holy Week: Do not harden your heart. Forty years long was I offended with that generation, and I said: “These people always err in their heart! And these men have not known My ways!” So I swore, in My wrath, that they shall not enter into My rest! Antiphon for Lent until Passion Sunday: Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch. Let it not be vain for you to rise up early, before the light: * For the Lord hath promised a crown to them that watch. Antiphon from from Passion Sunday until Wednesday of Holy Week: Do not harden your heart. When you hear the voice of the Lord today * Do not harden your heart. THE LENTEN HYMN UP UNTIL PASSION SUNDAY FROM THE OFFICE OF MATINS The fast, as taught by holy lore, We keep in solemn course once more: The fast to all men known, and bound In forty days of yearly round. The law and seers that were of old In divers ways this Lent foretold, Which Christ, all seasons’ King and Guide, In after ages sanctified. More sparing therefore let us make The words we speak, the food we take, Our sleep and mirth—and closer barred Be every sense in holy guard. Avoid the evil thoughts that roll Like waters o’er the heedless soul; Nor let the foe occasion find Our souls in slavery to bind. In prayer together let us fall, And cry for mercy, one and all, And weep before the Judge’s feet, And His avenging wrath entreat. Thy grace have we offended sore, By sins, O God, which we deplore; But pour upon us from on high, O pardoning One, Thy clemency. Remember Thou, though frail we be, That yet Thine handiwork are we; Nor let the honor of Thy Name Be by another put to shame. Forgive the sin that we have wrought; Increase the good that we have sought: That we at length, our wanderings o'er, May please Thee here and evermore. Grant O Thou Blessed Trinity, Grant, O Essential Unity, That this our fast of forty days May work our profit and Thy praise. Amen. THE LENTEN HYMN BEGINNING PASSION SUNDAY FROM THE OFFICE OF MATINS Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle Sing the last, the dread affray; O’er the cross, the victor’s trophy, Sound the high triumphal lay: Tell how Christ, the world’s Redeemer, As a victim won the day. God, his Maker, sorely grieving That the first-made Adam fell, When he ate the fruit of sorrow, Whose reward was death and Hell, Noted then this wood, the ruin Of the ancient wood to quell. For the work of our salvation Needs would have his order so, And the multiform deceiver’s Art by art would overthrow, And from thence would bring the med’cine Whence the insult of the foe. Wherefore, when the sacred fullness Of the appointed time was come, This world’s Maker left His Father, Sent the heav’nly mansion from, And proceeded, God Incarnate, Of the Virgin’s holy womb. Weeps the Infant in the manger That in Bethlehem’s stable stands; And His limbs the Virgin Mother Doth compose in swaddling bands, Meetly thus in linen folding Of her God the feet and hands. To the Trinity be glory Everlasting, as is meet; Equal to the Father, equal To the Son, and Paraclete: Trinal Unity, whose praises All created things repeat. Amen. The first of three psalms PSALM 9 Antiphon: Rebuke me not * O Lord, in Thy indignation; nor chastise me in Thy wrath (Psalm 37:2). [9:10] And the Lord is become a refuge for the poor: a helper in due time in tribulation. [9:11] And let them trust in Thee who know Thy Name: for Thou hast not forsaken them that seek Thee, O Lord. [9:12] Sing ye to the Lord, who dwelleth in Sion: declare His ways among the Gentiles. [9:13] For requiring their blood He hath remembered them: He hath not forgotten the cry of the poor. [9:14] Have mercy on me, O Lord: see my humiliation which I suffer from my enemies. [9:15] Thou that liftest me up from the gates of death, that I may declare all Thy praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion. [9:16] I will rejoice in Thy salvation! The Gentiles have stuck fast in the destruction which they have prepared. Their foot hath been taken in the very snare which they hid. [9:17] The Lord shall be known when He executeth judgments! The sinner hath been caught in the works of his own hands. [9:18] The wicked shall be turned into Hell, all the nations that forget God. [9:19] For the poor man shall not be forgotten to the end: the patience of the poor shall not perish for ever. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Rebuke me not * O Lord, in Thy indignation; nor chastise me in Thy wrath (Psalm 37:2). The second of three psalms PSALM 9 (continued) Antiphon: My iniquities * are gone over my head: and as a heavy burden are become heavy upon me (Psalm 37:5). [9:20] Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened! Let the Gentiles be judged in Thy sight. [9:21] Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them: that the Gentiles may know themselves to be but men. [9:22] Why, O Lord, hast Thou retired afar off? Why dost Thou slight us in our wants, in the time of trouble? [9:23] Whilst the wicked man is proud, the poor is set on fire: they are caught in the counsels which they devise. [9:24] For the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul: and the unjust man is blessed. [9:25] The sinner hath provoked the Lord, according to the multitude of his wrath he will not seek Him. [9:26] God is not before his eyes: his ways are filthy at all times. Thy judgments are removed from his sight: he shall rule over all his enemies. [9:27] For he hath said in his heart: “I shall not be moved from generation to generation, and shall be without evil.” [9:28] His mouth is full of cursing, and of bitterness, and of deceit: under his tongue are labor and sorrow. [9:29] He sits in ambush with the rich in private places, that he may kill the innocent. [9:30] His eyes are upon the poor man: He lies in wait in secret like a lion in his den. He lies in ambush that he may catch the poor man: to catch the poor, whilst he draws him to him. [9:31] In his net he will bring him down, he will crouch and fall, when he shall have power over the poor. [9:32] For he hath said in his heart: “God hath forgotten, He hath turned away His face not to see to the end.” Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: My iniquities * are gone over my head: and as a heavy burden are become heavy upon me (Psalm 37:5). The third of three psalms PSALM 9 (continued) Antiphon: Lord * all my desire is before Thee, and my groaning is not hidden from Thee. (Psalm 37:10). [9:33] Arise, O Lord God, let Thy hand be exalted: forget not the poor. [9:34] Wherefore hath the wicked provoked God? For he hath said in his heart: “He will not require it!” [9:35] Thou seest it, for Thou considerest labor and sorrow, that Thou mayest deliver them into Thy hands. To Thee is the poor man left! Thou wilt be a helper to the orphan. [9:36] Break Thou the arm of the sinner and of the malignant: his sin shall be sought, and shall not be found. [9:37] The Lord shall reign to eternity, yea, for ever and ever! Ye Gentiles shall perish from His land. [9:38] The Lord hath heard the desire of the poor! Thy ear hath heard the preparation of their heart. [9:39] To judge for the fatherless and for the humble, that man may no more presume to magnify himself upon Earth. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: Lord * all my desire is before Thee, and my groaning is not hidden from Thee. (Psalm 37:10). Versicle: I will not turn away My face from you, for I am holy, saith the Lord Response: And I will not be angry for ever! (Jeremias 3:12) Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Versicle: And lead us not into temptation: Response: But deliver us from evil. Absolution before the reading: O Lord Jesus Christ, graciously hear the prayers of Thy servants, and have mercy upon us, Who livest and reignest with the Father, and the Holy Ghost, for ever, world without end. Amen. FIRST READING Continuation of Homily #39 by Pope St. Gregory the Great, preached at the beginning of the Lenten season So, dearly-beloved, let us who instructed in Divine learning come wittingly to the present contest and strife, hear the Apostle when he says, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this dark world, against spiritual wickedness in heavenly things Ephesians 6:12, and let us not forget that these our enemies feel it is against them all is done that we strive to do for our salvation, and that by the very fact of our seeking after some good thing we are challenging our foes. For this is an old-standing quarrel between us and them fostered by the devil's ill-will, so that they are tortured by our being justified, because they have fallen from those good things to which we, God helping us, are advancing. If, therefore, we are raised, they are prostrated: if we are strengthened, they are weakened. Our cures are their blows, because they are wounded by our wounds' cure. Stand, therefore, dearly-beloved, as the Apostle says, having the loins of your mind girt in truth, and your feet shod in the preparation of the gospel of peace, in all things taking the shield of Faith in which you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the evil one, and put on the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God Ephesians 6:14-17. See, dearly-beloved, with what mighty weapons, with what impregnable defenses we are armed by our Leader, who is famous for His many triumphs, the unconquered Master of the Christian warfare. He has girt our loins with the belt of chastity, He has shod our feet with the bonds of peace: because the unbelted soldier is quickly vanquished by the suggester of immodesty, and he that is unshod is easily bitten by the serpent. He has given the shield of Faith for the protection of our whole body; on our head has He set the helmet of salvation; our right hand has He furnished with a sword, that is with the word of Truth: that the spiritual warrior may not only be safe from wounds, but also may have strength to wound his assailant. Versicle: But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us! Response: Thanks be to God! Versicle: The Lord is just in all His ways: and holy in all His works (Psalm 144:17). Response: For the Lord is just, and hath loved justice (Psalm 10:8). Versicle: The Lord is merciful and just, and our God showeth mercy (Psalm 114:5). Response: For the Lord is just, and hath loved justice (Psalm 10:8). SECOND READING Continuation of the Homily (#39) by Pope St. Gregory the Great Relying, therefore, dearly-beloved, on these arms, let us enter actively and fearlessly on the contest set before us: so that in this fasting struggle we may not rest satisfied with only this end, that we should think abstinence from food alone desirable. For it is not enough that the substance of our flesh should be reduced, if the strength of the soul be not also developed. When the outer man is somewhat subdued, let the inner man be somewhat refreshed; and when bodily excess is denied to our flesh, let our mind be invigorated by spiritual delights. Let every Christian scrutinize himself, and search severely into his inmost heart: let him see that no discord cling there, no wrong desire be harbored. Let chasteness drive incontinence far away; let the light of truth dispel the shades of deception; let the swellings of pride subside; let wrath yield to reason; let the darts of ill-treatment be shattered, and the chidings of the tongue be bridled; let thoughts of revenge fall through, and injuries be given over to oblivion. In fine, let every plant which the heavenly Father has not planted be removed by the roots Matthew 15:13. For then only are the seeds of virtue well nourished in us, when every foreign germ is uprooted from the field of wheat. If anyone, therefore, has been fired by the desire for vengeance against another, so that he has given him up to prison or bound him with chains, let him make haste to forgive not only the innocent, but also one who seems worthy of punishment, that he may with confidence make use of the clause in the Lord's prayer and say, Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. Which petition the Lord marks with peculiar emphasis, as if the efficacy of the whole rested on this condition, by saying, For if you forgive men their sins, your Father which is in heaven also will forgive you: but if you forgive not men, neither will your Father forgive you your sins. Versicle: But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us! Response: Thanks be to God! Versicle: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak: heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled (Psalm 6:3). Response: O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again (Psalm 40:11) Versicle: Forgive Thy people that have sinned against Thee Response: O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again (Psalm 40:11) Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again (Psalm 40:11) THIRD READING Continuation of the Homily (#39) by Pope St. Gregory the Great Accordingly, dearly-beloved, being mindful of our weakness, because we easily fall into all kinds of faults, let us by no means neglect this special remedy and most effectual healing of our wounds. Let us remit, that we may have remission: let us grant the pardon which we crave: let us not be eager to be revenged when we pray to be forgiven. Let us not pass over the groans of the poor with deaf ear, but with prompt kindness bestow our mercy on the needy, that we may deserve to find mercy in the judgment. And he that, aided by God's grace, shall strain every nerve after this perfection, will keep this holy fast faithfully; free from the leaven of the old wickedness, in the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth 1 Corinthians 5:8, he will reach the blessed Passover, and by newness of life will worthily rejoice in the mystery of man's reformation through Christ our Lord Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. Versicle: But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us! Response: Thanks be to God! Versicle: Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my cry. Hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God. Response: For to Thee will I pray, O Lord! In the morning Thou shalt hear my voice. Versicle: O Lord, rebuke me not in Thy indignation, nor chastise me in Thy wrath. Response: For to Thee will I pray, O Lord! In the morning Thou shalt hear my voice. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: For to Thee will I pray, O Lord! In the morning Thou shalt hear my voice. Versicle: My God is my helper, and in Him will I put my trust. Response: My protector and the horn of my salvation, and my support. PRAYER Versicle: O Lord, hear my prayer! Response: And let my cry come unto Thee! (Throughout the entire First Week in Lent) Let us pray. O God, Who dost every year purge Thy Church by the Fast of Forty Days, grant unto this Thy family, that what things soever they strive to obtain at Thy hand by abstaining from meats, they may ever turn to profit by good works. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Response: Amen (Throughout the entire Second Week in Lent) Let us pray. Almighty God, grant, we beseech Thee, unto this thy family, that as they do abstain from meals to afflict the flesh, so by following after righteousness they may fast from sin. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Response: Amen (Throughout the entire Third Week in Lent) Let us pray. Graciously hear us, O Almighty and merciful God, and in thy goodness enable us to reap the fruit of this our healthful Fasting. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Response: Amen (Throughout the entire Fourth Week in Lent) Let us pray. Grant, we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we who for our evil deeds are worthily punished, may, by the comfort of Thy grace, mercifully be relieved. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Response: Amen (Throughout the first Week of Passiontide which is the Fifth Week in Lent) Let us pray. Lord, we beseech Thee, that this our Fast may be acceptable in Thy sight, and may, through Thy blessing, effectually work in us, making us meet here to receive Thy grace and hereafter the everlasting glory which Thou hast promised. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Response: Amen (Throughout Palm Sunday and Monday to Wednesday in Holy Week which is the Sixth Week in Lent) Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, Who, of Thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent Thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon Him our flesh and to suffer death upon the Cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility; mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of His resurrection. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Response: Amen CONCLUSION Versicle: O Lord, hear my prayer! Response: And let my cry come unto Thee. Versicle: Let us bless the Lord! Response: Thanks be to God! Versicle: May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Response: Amen. The Second Liturgical Hour
THE DAWN PRAYER (LAUDS) FOR WEDNESDAY usually prayed before dawn (modern day suggestion: after waking in the morning, before breakfast) The Religious would rise from sleep once again before dawn, to pray Lauds. If Matins was not prayed during the middle of the night, then it is prayed now, at dawn, immediately before praying Lauds. Usually Lauds consists of (1) five psalms with their appropriate seasonal antiphons (2) followed by what is called a "Chapter Verse" which is a short paragraphed reading; (3) this is followed by a hymn that suits the liturgical season; (4) then follows the Canticle of St. Zachary, the "Benedictus" with its appropriate seasonal antiphon; (5) finally there is said the prayer or collect for the day or feast. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. OPENING INVOCATIONS

Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise be to Thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory. The first of five psalms PSALM 50 Antiphon: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity. 50:3 Have mercy on me, O God, * according to Thy great mercy. 50:3 And according to the multitude of Thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity. 50:4 Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin. 50:5 For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me. 50:6 To Thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before Thee: * that Thou mayst be justified in Thy words, and mayst overcome when Thou art judged. 50:7 For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me. 50:8 For behold Thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of Thy wisdom Thou hast made manifest to me. 50:9 Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. 50:10 To my hearing Thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice. 50:11 Turn away Thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities. 50:12 Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels. 50:13 Cast me not away from Thy face; * and take not Thy holy spirit from me. 50:14 Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit. 50:15 I will teach the unjust Thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to Thee. 50:16 Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol Thy justice. 50:17 O Lord, Thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. 50:18 For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings Thou wilt not be delighted. 50:19 A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise. 50:20 Deal favorably, O Lord, in Thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up. 50:21 Then shalt Thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon Thy altar. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: According to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity. The second of five psalms PSALMS 11 & 13 Antiphon: If the wicked do penance for all his sins, living he shall live, and shall not die [11:2] Save me, O Lord, for there is now no saint: truths are decayed from among the children of men. [11:3] They have spoken vain things everyone to his neighbor: with deceitful lips, and with a double heart have they spoken. [11:4] May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things. [11:5] Who have said: “We will magnify our tongue! Our lips are our own! Who is Lord over us?” [13:1] The fool hath said in his heart: “There is no God!” They are corrupt, and are become abominable in their ways: there is none that doth good, no not one. [13:2] The Lord hath looked down from Heaven upon the children of men, to see if there be any that understand and seek God. [13:3a] They are all gone aside, they are become unprofitable together: there is none that doth good, no not one. [13:3b] Their throat is an open sepulcher: with their tongues they acted deceitfully; the poison of asps is under their lips. [13:3c] Their mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood. [13:3d] Destruction and unhappiness in their ways: and the way of peace they have not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. [13:4] Shall not all they know that work iniquity, who devour My people as they eat bread? [13:5] They have not called upon the Lord: there have they trembled for fear, where there was no fear. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: If the wicked do penance for all his sins, living he shall live, and shall not die The third of five psalms PSALM 100 Antiphon: God hath given him place for penance, and he abuseth it unto pride 100:1 Mercy and judgment * I will sing to Thee, O Lord: 100:2 I will sing, and I will understand in the unspotted way, * when Thou shalt come to me. 100:2 I walked in the innocence of my heart, * in the midst of my house. 100:3 I did not set before my eyes any unjust thing: * I hated the workers of iniquities. 100:4 The perverse heart did not cleave to me: * and the malignant, that turned aside from me, I would not know. 100:5 The man that in private detracted his neighbor, * him did I persecute. 100:5 With him that had a proud eye, and an unsatiable heart, * I would not eat. 100:6 My eyes were upon the faithful of the Earth, to sit with me: * the man that walked in the perfect way, he served me. 100:7 He that worketh pride shall not dwell in the midst of my house: * he that speaketh unjust things did not prosper before my eyes. 100:8 In the morning I put to death all the wicked of the land: * that I might cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the Lord. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Antiphon: God hath given him place for penance, and he abuseth it unto pride The fourth of five psalms CANTICLE OF ANNA (Canticle of Anna * 1 Kings 2:1-16) Antiphon: Thou shalt correct me, O Lord, * and make me to live. 2:1 My heart hath rejoiced in the Lord, * and my horn is exalted in my God: 2:2 My mouth is enlarged over my enemies: * because I have joyed in Thy salvation. 2:3 There is none holy as the Lord is: for there is no other beside Thee, * and there is none strong like our God. 2:4 Do not multiply to speak lofty things, * boasting: 2:5 Let old matters depart from your mouth: for the Lord is a God of all knowledge, * and toHhim are thoughts prepared. 2:6 The bow of the mighty is overcome, * and the weak are girt with strength. 2:7 They that were full before have hired out themselves for bread: * and the hungry are filled, 2:8 So that the barren hath borne many: * and she that had many children is weakened. 2:9 The Lord killeth and maketh alive, * He bringeth down to Hell and bringeth back again. 2:10 The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich, * He humbleth and He exalteth. 2:11 He raiseth up the needy from the dust, * and lifteth up the poor from the dunghill: 2:12 That he may sit with princes, * and hold the throne of glory. 2:13 For the poles of the Earth are the Lord’s, * and upon them He hath set the world. 2:14 He will keep the feet of His saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness, * because no man shall prevail by his own strength. 2:15 The adversaries of the Lord shall fear Him: * and upon them shall He thunder in the Heavens. 2:16 The Lord shall judge the ends of the Earth, and He shall give empire to His king, * and shall exalt the horn of His Christ. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. [17:2] I will love Thee, O Lord, my strength! The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my deliverer! [17:3] My God is my helper, and in Him will I put my trust. My protector and the horn of my salvation, and my support. [17:4] Praising I will call upon the Lord; and I shall be saved from my enemies. [17:5] The sorrows of death surrounded me; and the torrents of iniquity troubled me. [17:6] The sorrows of Hell encompassed me; and the snares of death prevented me. [17:7] In my affliction I called upon the Lord, and I cried to my God! And He heard my voice from His holy temple and my cry before Him came into His ears! [17:17] He sent from on high, and took me in; and pulled me out of many waters. [17:18] He delivered me from my strongest enemies, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. [17:19] They confronted me in the day of my affliction: and the Lord became my protector. [17:20] And He brought me forth into a spacious place! He saved me, because He was well pleased with me. [17:21] And the Lord will reward me according to my justice; and will repay me according to the cleanness of my hands. [17:22] Because I have kept the ways of the Lord; and have not done wickedly against my God. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. CHAPTER VERSE (Isaias 58:1) Cry, cease not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their wicked doings, and the house of Jacob their sins. Response: Thanks be to God! THE HYMN FROM THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT AND BEFORE PASSION SUNDAY Jesus, salvation’s Sun Divine, Within our inmost bosoms shine, With light all darkness drive away And give the world a better day. Now days of grace with mercy flow, O Lord, the gift of tears bestow, To wash our stains in every part, Whilst heavenly fire consumes the heart. Rise, crystal tears, from that same source From whence our sins derive their course; Nor cease, till hardened hearts relent, And softened by your streams, repent. Behold, the happy days return, The days of joy for them that mourn; May we of their indulgence share, And bless the God that grants our prayer. May Heaven and Earth aloud proclaim The Trinity’s almighty fame; And we, restored to grace, rejoice In newness both of heart and voice. Amen. Versicle: Have mercy on me, O God, because Thou art merciful! Response: And wash away the stains of my sins!. THE HYMN BEGINNING WITH PASSION SUNDAY Thirty years among us dwelling, His appointed time fulfilled, Born for this, he meets his passion, For that this he freely willed: On the cross the Lamb is lifted, Where his life-blood shall be spilled. He endured the nails, the spitting, Vinegar, and spear, and reed; From that holy body broken Blood and water forth proceed: Earth, and stars, and sky, and ocean, By that flood from stain are free. Faithful cross! above all other, One and only noble tree! None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit thy peers may be; Sweetest wood and sweetest iron! Sweetest weight is hung on thee. Bend thy boughs, O tree of glory! Thy relaxing sinews bend; For awhile the ancient rigour, That thy birth bestowed, suspend; And the King of heavenly beauty On thy bosom gently tend! Thou alone wast counted worthy This world's ransom to uphold; For a shipwrecked race preparing Harbour, like the ark of old; With the sacred blood anointed From the smitten Lamb that rolled. To the Trinity be glory Everlasting, as is meet; Equal to the Father, equal To the Son, and Paraclete: Trinal Unity, whose praises All created things repeat. Amen. Versicle: Deliver me from my enemies, O my God. Response: And defend me from them that rise up against me. THE “BENEDICTUS” (Canticle of St. Zachary. Luke 1:68-79) Antiphon: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, * O Mary; fear not, thou shalt bear in thy womb the Son of God. Alleluia. 1:68 Blessed be the Lord ✠ (make a sign of the cross) God of Israel; * because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people: 1:69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, * in the house of David his servant: 1:70 As he spoke by the mouth of his holy Prophets, * who are from the beginning: 1:71 Salvation from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us: 1:72 To perform mercy to our fathers, * and to remember his holy testament, 1:73 The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, * that he would grant to us, 1:74 That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, * we may serve him without fear, 1:75 In holiness and justice before him, * all our days. 1:76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways: 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people, * unto the remission of their sins: 1:78 Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, * in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: 1:79 To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: * to direct our feet into the way of peace. THE MORNING PRAYER (PRIME) FOR WEDNESDAY usually prayed after breakfast and before starting work for the day (modern day suggestion: after breakfast and before work, before 9 a.m.) The word "Prime" refers to the first hour of daylight. It is the most recent addition to the Divine Office originating around the 4th century. It was the prayer said before starting work for the day. Usually Prime consists of (1) an opening hymn which is always the same regardless of season or feast (2) followed by three psalms with their appropriate seasonal antiphons (3) then comes what is called a "Chapter Verse" which is a short paragraphed reading; (4) this is followed by a prayer or collect which is always the same one, regardless of season or feast; (4) then the Martyrology for the day in read; (5) this is followed by another "Chapter Verse" and versicles; (6) then come the concluding prayers, which include the Our Father; (7) after which there is a seasonal "Chapter Verse" that is the same throughout the season; (8) finally there is said the short concluding prayer, which is always the same throughout the year. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. OPENING INVOCATIONS

HYMN Now in the sun’s new dawning ray, Lowly of heart, our God we pray That He from harm may keep us free In all the deeds this day shall see. May fear of Him our tongues restrain, Lest strife unguarded speech should stain: His favoring care our guardian be, Lest our eyes feed on vanity. May every heart be pure from sin And folly find no place therein: Scant need of food, excess denied, Wear down in us the body’s pride. That when the light of day is gone, And night in course shall follow on. We, free from cares the world affords, May chant the praise that is our Lord’s. All laud to God the Father be, All praise, Eternal Son, to Thee: All glory, as is ever meet, To God the Holy Paraclete. Amen. The first of three psalms PSALM 25 For Prime, the antiphon is only said once before the three psalms are said, and once after the three psalms have been said. Antiphon: Thou shalt correct me, O Lord, * and make me to live. 55:2 Have mercy on me, O God, for man hath trodden me under foot; * all the day long he hath afflicted me fighting against me. 55:3 My enemies have trodden on me all the day long; * for they are many that make war against me. 55:4 From the height of the day I shall fear: * but I will trust in Thee. 55:5 In God I will praise my words, in God I have put my trust: * I will not fear what flesh can do against me. 55:6 All the day long they detested my words: * all their thoughts were against me unto evil. 55:7 They will dwell and hide themselves: * they will watch my heel. 55:8 As they have waited for my soul, for nothing shalt Thou save them: * in Thy anger thou shalt break the people in pieces. 55:9 O God, I have declared to Thee my life: * Thou hast set my tears in Thy sight, 55:9 As also in Thy promise. * Then shall my enemies be turned back. 55:10 In what day soever I shall call upon Thee, * behold I know Thou art my God. 55:11 In God will I praise the word, in the Lord will I praise his speech. * In God have I hoped, I will not fear what man can do to me. 55:12 In me, O God, are vows to Thee, * which I will pay, praises to Thee: 55:13 Because Thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: * that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The second of three psalms PSALM 56 56:2 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me: * for my soul trusteth in Thee. 56:2 And in the shadow of thy wings will I hope, * until iniquity pass away. 56:3 I will cry to God the most High; * to God who hath done good to me. 56:4 He hath sent from Heaven and delivered me: * He hath made them a reproach that trod upon me. 56:4 God hath sent His mercy and His truth, * and He hath delivered my soul from the midst of the young lions. I slept troubled. 56:5 The sons of men, whose teeth are weapons and arrows, * and their tongue a sharp sword. 56:6 Be Thou exalted, O God, above the Heavens, * and Thy glory above all the Earth. 56:7 They prepared a snare for my feet; * and they bowed down my soul. 56:7 They dug a pit before my face, * and they are fallen into it. 56:8 My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready: * I will sing, and rehearse a psalm. 56:9 Arise, O my glory, arise psaltery and harp: * I will arise early. 56:10 I will give praise to Thee, O Lord, among the people: * I will sing a psalm to Thee among the nations. 56:11 For Thy mercy is magnified even to the Heavens: * and Thy truth unto the clouds. 56:12 Be Thou exalted, O God, above the Heavens: * and Thy glory above all the Earth. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The third of three psalms PSALM 57 57:2 If in very deed you speak justice: * judge right things, ye sons of men. 57:3 For in your heart you work iniquity: * your hands forge injustice in the Earth. 57:4 The wicked are alienated from the womb; they have gone astray from the womb: * they have spoken false things. 57:5 Their madness is according to the likeness of a serpent: * like the deaf asp that stoppeth her ears: 57:6 Which will not hear the voice of the charmers; * nor of the wizard that charmeth wisely. 57:7 God shall break in pieces their teeth in their mouth: * the Lord shall break the grinders of the lions. 57:8 They shall come to nothing, like water running down; * he hath bent his bow till they be weakened. 57:9 Like wax that melteth they shall be taken away: * fire hath fallen on them, and they shall not see the sun. 57:10 Before your thorns could know the brier; He swalloweth them up, * as alive, in His wrath. 57:11 The just shall rejoice when he shall see the revenge: * he shall wash his hands in the blood of the sinner. 57:12 And man shall say: If indeed there be fruit to the just: * there is indeed a God that judgeth them on the Earth. Our sins are many, this we know; Spare us, good Lord, Thy mercy show; And for the honor of Thy Name Our fainting souls to life reclaim. Blest tree, whose happy branches bore The wealth that did the world restore; The beam that did that body weigh Which raised up hell’s expected prey. The following verse is said on bended knee. O Cross, our one reliance, hail! This holy Passiontide avail To give fresh merit to the saint, And pardon to the penitent. THE NIGHT PRAYER (COMPLINE) FOR WEDNESDAY usually prayed before retiring to sleep for the night (modern day suggestion: anytime between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.) The English word Compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as Compline is the completion of the working day. The word was first used in this sense about the beginning of the 6th century by St. Benedict in his monastic Rule. Usually Compline consists of (1) an opening plea for God's blessing for the night to come; (2) followed by the Lord's Prayer (Our Father), an examination of conscience, and the recitation of the Act of Contrition, the Confiteor, with the two prayers of absolution that follow; (3) after which three psalms with their appropriate seasonal antiphons are prayed; (4) these are followed by a hymn which is always the same throughout the year; (5) then follows a "Chapter Verse"; (6) this is followed by the Canticle of St. Simeon; (7) after which comes the concluding prayer or collect, which is always the same; (8) finally, the seasonal antiphon or hymn to Our Lady is sung. Below you have an abbreviated version that you can easily pray. OPENING INVOCATION
Please grant us, O Lord, a blessing! May almighty God grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen. SHORT READING (1 Peter 5:8-9) Brothers: Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour. Whom resist ye, strong in Faith! Versicle: But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us! Response: Thanks be to God! Versicle: Our help is ☩ (make the Sign of the Cross) in the Name of the Lord! Response: Who made Heaven and Earth. There follows an examination of conscience, or the Our Father said silently. Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: But deliver us from evil. Amen. Then all say the Confiteor aloud I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word and deed: (strike your chest three times) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. May the almighty ☩ (make the Sign of the Cross) and merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution and remission of our sins. Amen. Versicle: Turn us then, ☩ (make the Sign of the Cross over the heart with your right thumb) O God, our Savior! Response: And let thy anger cease from us! Versicle: O God, ☩ (make the Sign of the Cross) come to my assistance! Response: O Lord, make haste to help me! Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise be to Thee, O Lord, King of eternal glory. The first of three psalms PSALM 33 For Compline, the antiphon is only said once before the three psalms are said, and once after the three psalms have been said. Antiphon: Unless you do penance * you shall likewise perish. 33:2 I will bless the Lord at all times, * His praise shall be always in my mouth. 33:3 In the Lord shall my soul be praised: * let the meek hear and rejoice. 33:4 O magnify the Lord with me; * and let us extol His Name together. 33:5 I sought the Lord, and He heard me; * and He delivered me from all my troubles. 33:6 Come ye to Him and be enlightened: * and your faces shall not be confounded. 33:7 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him: * and saved him out of all his troubles. 33:8 The Angel of the Lord shall encamp round about them that fear Him: * and shall deliver them. 33:9 O taste, and see that the Lord is sweet: * blessed is the man that hopeth in Him. 33:10 Fear the Lord, all ye His saints: * for there is no want to them that fear Him. 33:11 The rich have wanted, and have suffered hunger: * but they that seek the Lord shall not be deprived of any good. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The second of three psalms PSALM 33 (continued) 33:12 Come, children, hearken to Me: * I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 33:13 Who is the man that desireth life: * who loveth to see good days? 33:14 Keep thy tongue from evil, * and thy lips from speaking guile. 33:15 Turn away from evil and do good: * seek after peace and pursue it. 33:16 The eyes of the Lord are upon the just: * and His ears unto their prayers. 33:17 But the countenance of the Lord is against them that do evil things: * to cut off the remembrance of them from the Earth. 33:18 The just cried, and the Lord heard them: * and delivered them out of all their troubles. 33:19 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart: * and He will save the humble of spirit. 33:20 Many are the afflictions of the just; * but out of them all will the Lord deliver them. 33:21 The Lord keepeth all their bones, * not one of them shall be broken. 33:22 The death of the wicked is very evil: * and they that hate the just shall be guilty. 33:23 The Lord will redeem the souls of His servants: * and none of them that trust in Him shall offend. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The third of three psalms PSALM 60 60:2 Hear, O God, my supplication: * be attentive to my prayer. 60:3 To Thee have I cried from the ends of the Earth: * when my heart was in anguish, Thou hast exalted me on a rock. 60:4 Thou hast conducted me; for Thou hast been my hope: * a tower of strength against the face of the enemy. 60:5 In Thy tabernacle I shall dwell for ever: * I shall be protected under the covert of Thy wings. 60:6 For Thou, my God, hast heard my prayer: * Thou hast given an inheritance to them that fear Thy Name. 60:7 Thou wilt add days to the days of the king: * his years even to generation and generation. 60:8 He abideth for ever in the sight of God: * His mercy and truth who shall search? 60:9 So will I sing a psalm to Thy Name for ever and ever: * that I may pay my vows from day to day. Versicle: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
