LITANIES FOR PASSIONTIDE The Last Two Weeks of Lent
Passiontide, the last two week of Lent, that leads us into the Resurrection of Our Lord, is the most important season of the entire liturgical year. It encapsulates all that pertains to our Redemption and potential salvation. Within Passiontide we have the major feasts of Palm Sunday, the day on which Our Lord entered Jerusalem for the final time before His death. Holy (Maundy) Thursday sees the institution of the greatest of all the Sacraments, the Holy Eucharist. This is followed by Good Friday, the day upon which Christ died for our Redemption from sin and slavery to the devil. Holy Saturday focuses upon the sufferings of the Sorrowful Mother. The word "Passion" comes from Latin verb "patere" (whose past participle is "passus") which means to suffer. Hence Passiontide focuses on the sufferings and death of our Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ. Thus the litanies for Passiontide are those that help us focus on Christ's suffering

Lord Jesus, at Your betrayal and arrest all Your friends fled in fear and deserted You. GOOD LORD, GIVE US COURAGE IN TIME OF TRIAL. Lord Jesus, You were falsely accused and condemned for speaking the truth before Caiaphas, the high priest. GOOD LORD, MAY WE SPEAK TRUTH IN THE FACE OF INJUSTICE. Lord Jesus, in the courtyard of the high priest, Simon Peter swore three times that he did not know You. GOOD LORD, MAKE US FAITHFUL IN TIME OF TEMPTATION. Lord Jesus, Pilate traded You for a murderer and handed You over to crucifixion. GOOD LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US SINNERS. Lord Jesus, You were beaten, mocked, and humiliated by Pilate’s soldiers. GOOD LORD, MAY WE SUFFER GLADLY FOR YOUR SAKE. Lord Jesus, on the cross You were taunted and derided as King of the Jews. GOOD LORD, MAY WE ALWAYS LIVE IN OBEDIENCE TO YOU. Lord Jesus, on the cross You forgave Your enemies. GOOD LORD, GIVE US THE GRACE TO FORGIVE OURS. Lord Jesus, from the cross You promised paradise to a repentant criminal. Lord Jesus, the women who had followed You from Galilee watched as You were put to rest in the tomb. GOOD LORD, WE AWAIT WITH JOY YOUR GLORIOUS RESURRECTION ON THE THIRD DAY. (Pause for special intentions.) We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, FOR BY YOUR HOLY CROSS YOU HAVE REDEEMED THE WORLD. Closing Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, You were fastened with nails to the wood of the cross and raised on high for all to see. As the sun grew dark and the earth quaked, You surrendered Your spirit to Your Father, descended among the dead, broke open the gates of hell, and freed those bound in darkness. As angel choirs rejoiced, You were raised to life again on the third day, destroying death by Your own death and canceling the power of sin. By these mighty deeds on our behalf, rescue us from our blindness and tepidity, inspire us anew by Your Holy Spirit, and lead us into a life of prayer and service worthy of Your awesome sacrifice, O Savior of the world, living and reigning with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. O Mary, refuge of sinners, Save us by thy prayers! Through the bitter Passion of thy Son, Save us by thy prayers! Through the piercing anguish of thy heart, Save us by thy prayers! Through thy heavy weight of woe, Save us by thy prayers! Through thy sadness and desolation, Save us by thy prayers! Through thy maternal pity, Save us by thy prayers! Through thy perfect resignation, Save us by thy prayers! Through thy meritorious prayers, Save us by thy prayers! From immoderate sadness, Save us by thy prayers! From a cowardly spirit, Save us by thy prayers! From an impatient temper, Save us by thy prayers! From fretfulness and discontent, Save us by thy prayers! From sullenness and gloom, Save us by thy prayers! From despair and unbelief, Save us by thy prayers! From final impenitence, Save us by thy prayers!
We sinners beseech thee, hear us! Preserve us from sudden death, We beseech thee, hear us! Teach us how to die, We beseech thee, hear us! Succor us in our last agony, We beseech thee, hear us! Guard us from the enemy, We beseech thee, hear us! Bring us to a happy end, We beseech thee, hear us! Gain for us the gift of perseverance, We beseech thee, hear us! Aid us before the Judgment Seat, We beseech thee, hear us! Mother of God, We beseech thee, hear us! Mother, most sorrowful, We beseech thee, hear us! Mother, most desolate, We beseech thee, hear us!
Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, Spare us, O Lord. Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, Graciously hear us, O Lord. Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, Have mercy on us!
V. Help us, Most Sorrowful Mother of God R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ
Let us pray: O Lord Jesus Christ, God and Man, grant, we beseech Thee, that Thy dear Mother Mary, whose soul the sword pierced in the hour of Thy Passion, may intercede for us, now and in the hour of our death, through Thine own merits, O Savior of the world, Who with the Father and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest, God, world without end. R. Amen.
